Confirm measurements and levels
Measure the area and mark thresholds, steps, drains, posts and existing surfaces. Record level changes so the transition into doors, paths or pool edges can be planned.
Discuss finished heights with the installer, particularly where paving meets buildings or other fixed surfaces. Local site conditions determine the appropriate construction details.
Prepare the layout and access
Choose a pattern and paver format, then mark out borders and likely cuts. Confirm delivery access, storage location and the sequence for moving materials through the site.
Protect existing structures and agree how the work area will be kept safe and clear. If the project includes coping or walling, coordinate those components with the paving layout.
Agree on drainage and joints
The installer should explain how the base, falls, drainage and movement joints will be handled. These are site-specific details; avoid relying on a generic online diagram for construction decisions.
