Why the pale marks appear
Cement-based products contain compounds that can move with moisture. When moisture reaches the surface and evaporates, mineral deposits may remain visible as a whitish haze.
The effect can be more noticeable on darker colours. Its appearance does not by itself establish that a paver has failed or that the installation is defective.
Allow time and review drainage
Efflorescence often reduces naturally over time, although the timing varies. Persistent or severe deposits should prompt a review of drainage, moisture sources and installation conditions with the contractor.
Avoid repeatedly wetting a new installation as a treatment. Moisture may contribute to the process, and each site has different drainage and curing conditions.
Cleaning needs care
Some contractors use commercial efflorescence cleaners. These products must be applied as directed and tested for compatibility with the paving and any sealer.
Read the [Customstone SA FAQ](/faqs/) and consult a professional before using a cleaner.
