Compare undertones and texture
Place samples next to existing tiles, stone, brick or concrete in natural light. Consider whether the existing surface is warm or cool, smooth or textured, and how it changes when wet.
A close colour match may still look different if the textures or formats contrast strongly. Decide whether to blend the surfaces or make the transition a clear design feature.
Use borders and transitions thoughtfully
A border or change in laying direction can separate old and new areas cleanly. Ensure the detail works with door thresholds, steps and drainage rather than adding a narrow strip that is difficult to install.
Ask the installer to set out the boundary before work begins. Joint alignment and cut sizes affect how professional the transition looks.
Select a sample, not a screen image
Natural materials vary, and existing surfaces may have weathered. View current samples on site before ordering and check how they look in both shade and sun.
